The Zanzibar fish markets attract a large crowd each morning as hundreds of people jostle and cajole to buy the fresh daily catch from the Indian Ocean. Locals line the waters edge often arriving before the crack of dawn. Tensions are high as people compete for limited quantities of fish on sale that day. This is a serious business. Young men jump into the water and swim to the boats with large buckets to be the first to buy the fish wholesale from the boats.
